An earlier start this morning, as we have to be all packed up and gone by before 9am so we can go to the Bilby experience. It is a bit cool again this morning. and we manage to get everything packed up just in time for the Bilby's.
The Bilby experience we very good, and they are so cute, and it is very interesting learning about them and the efforts involved in preserving them, as they are on the brink of extintion. We learned some interesting facts about how many wild cats there are, 20 million in australia, foxes: 4 million and Rabbits, 8 million. All have a huge impact on the well being of the Bilbys.
We leave the information center around 10 am and are on our way to Cunnamulla, a distance of 199 kms. We travel for around 30 mins, and come across the explosion site of where a truck of Nitrate exploded. The truck was carring 53 tonnes of ammonium Nitrate and caught fire, which caused an explosion which was felt over 30 kms away. Amazingly, no-one, the truck driver and emergency first responders were killed in the explosion, although the highway and railway was severly damaged, and the railway line has never been repaired.
We continue on our way and we next stop at Wyandrah, which has a post office and a pub, and a beach.
The Beach is a sandy area on the banks of the Warrego creek, 1.5 kms out of Wyandrah. We let the dogs out for a spell, and Jack and Floss have their first swim since leaving home, well Floss just puddles. I think Jack really enjoyed it, as he swam over to the other side of the creek, and then we had to make our way back to the ute, to get him to get out of the water. A couple of shakes later, we have the dogs back on board.
The Post office which is a functioning post office, also has a cafe and a caravan park aswell. We have a cup of coffee and some toasted Ham, cheese and Tomato sandwiches. The public toilets are at the town hall, which is a couple of blocks over.
We continue on our way again, next stop Cunnamulla. The landscape has changed somewhat, as there are no hills, and the dirt has become red. I spot lots of Emus, and not much livestock.
We arrive at Cunnamulla at 2pm and find our caravan park that we are staying at. Again the caravan park is very full, and we are directed to our site. It is a great site, nice and close to the camp kitchen. The park managers were saying that they have had to turn people away, as they had not booked in advance. Thankfully we did.
We set up our campsite, then we take a walk with the dogs, and at just after 5 we head up to the Happy Hour to listen to some music around the campfire.
We make use of the camp kitchen that is near us and cook up our evening meal, and then retire for the evening watching a Movie. It is cold tonight.
